FBG Principle

Fiber Bragg Gratings are made by laterally exposing the core of a single-mode fiber to a periodic pattern of intense ultraviolet light. The exposure produces a permanent increase in the refractive index of the fiber‘s core, creating a fixed index modulation according to the exposure pattern. This fixed index modulation is called a grating.

A third measurement technique for FBG interrogation is based on the optical path length difference and hence the travel time of the light („Time of Flight “) between different fiber Bragg gratings along one optical fiber.

Fiber Tagging

When servicing data transmission cables, one is often required to be able to distinguish data conduits from each other. For electrical data transmission lines, it is known to utilize unique resistors attached along such conduits to serve as identification markers or labels.
