Context: Monitor temperature changes in production process of steel casting using fiber optic sensing – meaning monitoring the molds in which the liquid steel is being casted.

Challenge: During casting and cooling the temperature plays a major role in safeguarding the production process and guaranteeing the quality of the produced steel. Given the size of the molds, the process requires multiple fibers and a maximum number of measurement points to pinpoint the changes exactly.

Solution: The number of measurement points which can be measured with the same optical engine is doubled leading to a more cost-effective installation and further exploiting the unique multiplexing capabilities of FBG-based fiber sensing.
