A recent presentation at an international robotics conference demonstrates the feasibility of an articulate robotic needle, which enables a simultaneous estimation of local temperature and force at the tip.

The sensing system capitalizes on the high resolution and low noise FAZ Tech’s I4 Interrogator and FBGS’s uniquely robust polarization maintaining draw-tower grating (PM-DTG®) optical fiber sensor, which was integrated within a specially constructed steerable needle.
