The companies FBGS and EBDS Engineering joint forces and knowhow to demonstrate a comprehensive solution using Fiber Bragg Grating sensors instead of thermocouples in order to measure temperature profiles in copper molds during continuous steel casting.
Multiple FBG sensors (>200) were installed into a broadface copper plate of a slab caster replacing a conventional temperature monitoring system and visualizing the detailed temperature profile of the liquid steel while flowing through the mold.
FBG sensors provide several advantages over thermocouples such as an ultra-high sensor count, long lifetime, fast installation, mounting technique independent from the water jacket, high measurement reliability, no electrical connections needed and cost effectiveness.
Due to FBGS´s production technologies (DTG®, FSG®) it was possible to inscribe high numbers of temperature sensors on a single fiber enabling an unprecedented measurement density, which is beneficial for this specific application.
